Astrophytum asterias, known as the Star Cactus, Sea Urchin Cactus or Sand Dollar Cactus, is a lovely solitary cactus that is native to Mexico.
Grows as a flat solitary cactus up to 15cm in diameter and 2-6cm in height. In cultivation it grows quite spherical in shape but in the wild it is commonly found flat on the surface with most of the body of the cactus completely buried. In the wild it is almost extinct, mostly due to habitat destruction. In the wild it decreases in size when lacking water and might be covered with dust during the dry season. The rain makes it swell and washes it, making it ready to enjoy the sunlight.
The white flecking is very variable from clone to clone.
It generally has 8 ribs but doesn't have spines, except when very young.
The cactus blooms in summer at irregular intervals. The 5cm wide flowers are yellow with a red centre, and sweet scented. They are followed by spineless greyish-red fruits. Plants generally start blooming when they exceed 2.5cm in diameter.
Hardy to -6°C.
